FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions regarding the BYM summit?

WHO MAY APPLY?

Any person between the ages of 20 – 30 years who is studying or has recently graduated from a South African university may apply. Preference will be given to final-year and post-graduate students, but that does not exclude the possibility of younger students being selected.

HOW DO I APPLY ?

Application forms can be downloaded from here and must be completed on the official application form and e-mailed back to us on or before the 22nd of July 2010.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTION?

The top 100 applicants are selected on criteria of innovation / initiative shown, leadership and academic and professional accomplishments.

WHAT ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDS DO YOU FAVOUR?

None in particular. One of the valuable aspects of the BYM summit is that it brings young people across different backgrounds together. Past delegates have studies anything from law to medicine, literature, engineering, theology, actuarial science, politics, accounting, etc.

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE SUMMIT?

The 2010 summit takes place from 7 – 11 September 2010 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape

WHAT IF I CAN ONLY ATTEND PART OF THE SUMMIT?

All delegates have to attend the entire conference, except for extra-ordinary circumstances.

WHY ISN’T THE SUMMIT DURING THE JUNE/JULY HOLIDAYS?

We’ve decided to shift the summit to September this year in order to escape the soccer madness that’s set to engulf the country in June/July. Many universities have also re-arranged their holiday dates in order to accommodate the 2010 Soccer World Cup, so there’s very little overlap between holiday dates. However, we don’t want this to deter you from applying: so that you can get leave of absence from varsity/ work, we will issue you a formal letter confirming your attendance upon request.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS INVOLVED?

There are no costs involved in applying or attending the conference. BYM will as far as possible even subsidise some of the travel costs to get to the summit.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SUMMIT?

The summit consists of several briefings/provocations, inspiring talks/presentations, one-on-one and small group work and some skills development training. The majority of the agenda is however dedicated to a facilitated process of developing innovative, scalable and sustainable ideas that can benefit society. Have a look at what happened at some of the previous summits.
